On Friday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle.
The meeting was held in the
framework of the Seventh Annual Yalta Meeting "Ukraine and World: Re-Thinking and
Moving On."
The Parties discussed European integration prospects of Ukraine and related tasks facing the country. Mr Štefan Füle stated: "The resolution to implement the reforms drawing the European Union and Ukraine closer is right." He stated that Ukraine is working upon the prospects of relations with the EU, "tackling the domestic issues at the same time, which facilitates realization of the pro-European program."
The Parties also discussed harmonization of Ukrainian laws with the European standards, which is an element of the European integration action plan.
Summing up the results of the meetings with Štefan Füle and Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, V.Lytvyn underscored their significance, as "the future development of the world was taken into account."
"It is generally acknowledged that Ukraine has all the grounds and chances to become a member of the European community on one condition: if it works and fulfills all the tasks required," he stated. "I believe that Europe is a civilization dimension, rather than a geographical one." The Head of the Parliament stressed: "If Ukraine meets this civilization dimension, it will have no difficulties accessing the European organizations." Moreover, "as the whole world, Europe faces great challenges, which requires integrity. No one should come out of this integrity by the level of internal organization."
Asked about the availability of a single
strategy concerning Ukraine
in Europe, V.Lytvyn stated: "At first, we
should develop a single European strategy
to reach better understanding with the European community." "However,
domestic political confrontations are based on the principle of mutual
destruction, which account for the attempts to stand aloof," he admitted. He
stressed that the Europeans respond to our appeals to facilitate European integration
of Ukraine
with the phrase that "the Ukrainians have learnt to word their position nicely;
however, it also needs a pragmatic foundation."
